We started Poem of the Week, P.O.W., today. A lot of students need to work on correcting handwriting issues so they practiced their cursive by writing the poem, To Any Reader, into their journals. We will be working on this poem's deeper meaning throughout the week, and then there will be a quiz similar to the ones found on MONTCAS and NWEA testing format. Poetry is difficult for kids to understand sometimes, especially when there are hidden meanings involved. By doing these weekly, we will be able to start to learn some techniques to read between the lines. I, myself, love poetry!
Chapter 3 in math is going to be coming to a close before the break. It would be great if kids could remind their brains of all the concepts learned in this chapter: mental math division, long division, dividing money, finding factors, prime factorization, and order of operations. It might be a good idea to have students bring home their math book and review a few problems from each section. It is hard to remember 13 lessons for one chapter overnight.
Tall Tales are coming along in reading. We are over half way through the novel. Students seem to have a firm grasp on similies and metaphors along with exaggerations. If you get a chance, you should check out our Acrostic poems hanging in the hallway that the kids wrote using all kinds of technology about all the different Tall Tale Characters/Stories.
Midterms came home tonight. Please sign and return them tomorrow. Any missing work can be made up and turned in for a better grade before report cards. I also have given all D and F math quizzes back to students to redo for a better grade, but often do not get them back in. Choices=Consequences.
Have a great day! It is supposed to be snowy and cold all week. Please have kids dress appropriately. Thanks.
